After achieving four A levels, Helen went to Cardiff University to study English Literature. She took a year out and worked at a prep school in Somerset as a graduate assistant before heading to Swansea University to complete teacher training and gain her PGCE. Helen then began her teaching career at a comprehensive school just outside of Cardiff in Penarth. Five years into her teaching career she became the KS3 co-ordinator for English and then five years later she became the Director of Learning Support and SENCO. Helen then made the move to become Head of Morgan House at Cardiff Sixth Form College in 2019.
