Last week, Cardiff Sixth Form College was delighted to present medical charity, Médecins Sans Frontières (Doctors Without Borders) with a cheque for over £2,000.
Set up in 1971, Doctors Without Borders provides global emergency medical aid to individuals affected by medical crises caused by conflict, epidemics, disasters, or lack of access to health care.
Every year, our students fundraise at our annual Cultural Event for a charity chosen by themselves. This year, the students voted for Doctors Without Borders as their chosen charity. Our donation of £2017.78 was raised entirely by the students, through ticket sales and a prize raffle held on the evening.
We were honoured to present our cheque to Mary ‘Flowa’ Houldsworth, a nurse and midwife who has been assisting Doctors Without Borders worldwide for many years, in appalling conditions. The cheque was presented to Flowa by seven Year 12 students from our Cultural Event Committee including Xinyu Ye, Andrew Mak, Maxwell Chan, Hannah Yusuf, Tsin Tsin Lo, Rhian Gruar and Kristina Abraamyan (pictured left to right in the photo opposite).
Upon accepting the cheque, Flowa delivered an inspirational speech about her experience of assisting Doctors Without Borders, including a focus on her work in South Sudan, which we are sure would have been of great interest to our aspiring medical students.
Well done to all students involved in fundraising for Doctors Without Borders! We look forward to finding out which charity our students will choose to support at next year’s Cultural Event.
