A Weekend of Culture and Learning in Dublin – The Renaissance Scholars Symposium
This past weekend, Cardiff Sixth Form College students had the incredible opportunity to visit the Institute of Education, Dublin, for the prestigious Renaissance Scholars Symposium. The trip was an enriching blend of academic exploration, cultural immersion, and hands-on experiences, making for a truly unforgettable weekend in the heart of Ireland’s capital.
From the moment they arrived, our students embraced the vibrant history and traditions of Dublin. They delved into the city’s fascinating Viking past, gaining insight into the early settlers who shaped Ireland’s heritage. They also had the unique chance to learn a little Irish (Gaeilge)—a fantastic way to connect with the country’s linguistic roots and appreciate its rich cultural identity.
A hands-on approach to cultural discovery saw students rolling up their sleeves to bake traditional Irish soda bread, a staple of Irish cuisine. The energy continued to build as they took to the floor for an evening of traditional Irish dancing, experiencing the lively rhythms and spirit of a céilí firsthand.
A major highlight of the trip was a visit to Trinity College Dublin, where students marveled at one of Ireland’s greatest cultural treasures—the Book of Kells. This beautifully illuminated manuscript, created by monks over 1,200 years ago, offered a glimpse into the artistic and scholarly achievements of early medieval Ireland.
As if the weekend couldn’t get any better, students were treated to a memorable evening at the National Concert Hall, where they had the unexpected delight of seeing Chris de Burgh perform live! The legendary singer-songwriter’s music added a magical touch to an already extraordinary weekend.
A huge Go raibh míle maith agaibh (a thousand thanks) to Yvonne, Deirdre, and the entire team at the Institute of Education for their warm hospitality and for organizing such a fantastic experience. This weekend was not just a trip—it was a journey through history, language, music, and culture, leaving our students inspired and eager to learn more.
